2020: 400 years since the Mayflower voyage
On the 16th September 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England, with 102 passengers onboard, heading for the New World. The Pilgrims planned to establish a colony in Virginia, but ended up over 500 miles off course and instead made landfall on the 21st November in Provincetown, Massachusetts. In late December, they founded the first Pilgrim settlement and named it Plymouth.
Today, the Mayflower Museum tells the story of the voyage through interactive exhibitions and features 1:11 inch scale replica of the iconic ship. 2020 is a particularly special year as Clare Phillips, Visitor Services Manager at Plymouth Mayflower, explains:
“2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth England to Plymouth Massachusetts in 1620. This was one of the most influential journeys in global history and more than 30 million people can trace their ancestry back to the 102 passengers and 30 crew on board.
We have been working with the Mayflower Museum to put together a range of garments that commemorate the Mayflower’s departure in 1620. Take a look at some of the garments below, including commemorative hoodies featuring the original passenger list on the back.
The Mayflower Museum in Plymouth tells the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims and is located close to their departure point in Plymouth historic Barbican. Already welcoming many of the Pilgrims descendants each year, keen to take home a souvenir that features their family name, our range of t-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the Mayflower ship and passenger list has proved very popular with visitors.”
Starting in November 2019, a year long series of events have been planned to mark the Mayflower’s 400th year, taking place in various cities across Europe, USA and, of course, in Plymouth.
Plymouth was the Pilgrims final departure point and plays a lead role in the Mayflower 400 commemorations. A year long programme of events is planned, showcasing the very best in English heritage, culture and legacy. You can expect spectacular events, unique festivals and quirky cultural experiences making Britains Ocean City the place to be during 2020.
Make sure Plymouth features on your travel plans for 2020! These events are sure to be a spectacular experience: Mayflower400uk.org
